What is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is a strictly monitored process for new medications and treatments that are tested on humans in an inpatient hospital setting or an outpatient clinic setting. In the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, safety of our patients is the main concern.

Clinical trials are entered into on a strictly voluntary basis. Volunteers are informed of any possible risks and sign a consent form before participating in a clinical trial. Many clinical trials do not guarantee medication treatment. The research associate can tell you if there is the chance to receive a placebo (sugar pill).

Before enrolling in a clinical trial, a research associate will explain the purpose of the trial, its expected benefits, any possible risk or side effects, and your role. You will also discuss what your treatment options will be after the trial has ended. You may ask questions at any time whether it be during the informed consent process, during the actual clinical trial, or after concluding participation.

Since patients participate in a clinical trial on a voluntary basis, you may leave the trial at any time. You are not obligated to remain in the trial even after signing the consent forms.
