Wagner receives prestigious national award The American Psychiatric Association has recognized Dr. Karen Dineen Wagner, Marie B. Gale Centennial Professor in Psychiatry and vice chairwoman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with its prestigious Blanche F. Ittleson Award for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Wagner receives the award for her research and publications about mood disorders in children and adolescents which have advanced evidence-based treatment in the field. Read more in Impact. |
Psychology Today story features UTMB psychiatrist "Bipolar disorder, involving moods that swing between the highs of mania and the lows of depression, is typically confused with everything from unipolar depression to schizophrenia to substance abuse, to borderline personality disorder, with just about all stops in between," according to "Wrestling with Bipolar Disorder," a story included in the current issue of Psychology Today. The article examines the misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder, its pervasiveness in our society, and a shift away from antidepressants as a treatment for the disorder. Dr. Robert Hirschfeld, UTMB professor and chair of Psychiatry/Behavioral Sciences, is quoted extensively in the story, specifically regarding the depression aspect of bipolar disease, and how antidepressants are turning out to be "underwhelming in their ability to treat the depression."
