Joan R. Hebeler, M.D.

Dr. Joan Rochelle Hebeler is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Pediatrics at UTMB. She is also the Director of the Child and Adolescent Consultation and Liaison Service for Psychiatry within UTMB. She has been a faculty member since 1990. Dr. Hebeler is certified as a Diplomate in the Specialties of Pediatrics, General Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

She is extensively involved in teaching at UTMB where she educates medical students, psychiatric residents, and pediatric residents. Dr. Hebeler also maintains an established outpatient practice providing follow-up care to her current psychiatric patients.

Dr. Hebeler is an expert in the Psychopathology and treatments of Children and Adolescents. Her specific areas of interest have included physical abuse and neglect, sexual abuse and incest, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, sleep disorders, and grief.

Dr. Hebeler received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. She continued on there earning her Doctorate of Medicine in 1958. Dr. Hebeler completed her rotating internship at UTMB and residency in Pediatrics. She served as Chief Resident during her fellowships which included Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Hematology as well as Child Development.

After working over 2 decades as a pediatrician, Dr. Hebeler completed an additional residency in general and child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas, completing her studies in 1987.

Her professional experience is immense and includes participation in dozens of research projects. Her current research interests include consultation and liaison psychiatry, psychiatric aspects of medical illnesses, mood and anxiety disorders in childhood and psychiatric medications used in children and adolescents.

Dr. Hebeler serves on dozens of professional committees throughout UTMB. She speaks both English and Spanish fluently. Her numerous publications have included several dozen articles, chapters, self-instructional units, scientific reports, workshops, and reviews.

Honors awarded to Dr. Hebeler have included a service award from the Texas Jaycees for assisting in developing a statewide educational program regarding child abuse, commendation from the Texas Department of Human Resources Governing Board and State Commissioner for work on the state-licensed Child Care Advisory Committee, and recognition by the Texas Pediatric Society for contribution to the continuing education of pediatricians.
